| The Hotel Bristol is located in the Makart Square, named after the Salzburg painter and "magician of colours" Hans Makart (1840-1884). Originally at this site, at the end of the 16th century, Archbishop Wolf Dietrich built a palace with garden for his brother Rudolf Hannibal. Till the end of the 19th century, the square, surrounded by the Church of the Holy Trinity, Mozart's residence, the birth place of the physicist Christian Doppler and the local theatre, was known as Hannibal Square. After the death of Hans Makart and in memory of this famous Salzburg painter, the Hannibal Square was renamed Makart Square. The Bristol was built around 1890. According to witnesses of the time it was the first hotel on the right side of the river Salzach to be equipped with electric lighting. In the more than 100 years of history of the hotel, the guest book is naturally filled with numerous prominent names. The period spans from Emperor Franz Joseph I. or Sigmund Freud up to Ricardo Muti. |
